Formula for Life

My concept for writing an album called Formula for Life came from two major life events that hit me in close proximity and succession in 2016.

On Friday 18th November 2016, 10:30am I sat in the consultant’s office at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, UK and they gave me the news that I have prostate cancer.

I went to the appointment on my own feeling full of beans and confident because that’s my natural disposition. I am also very fit and when things are going well you don’t think the worse. The diagnosis was not the end of the world because as it turned out it’s a low-grade version cancer and the signs bode well for the future.

The 23rd December 2016 was another major life event. After experiencing some sharp pain behind my eye I visited the doctor to get things checked out. They tried to persuade me it was nothing serious but I asked to be referred for a brain scan and they refused. It was only after a major argument that the GP gave in to my request.

The scan revealed I had something called an arteriovenous malformation on my brain (AVM) which is normally discovered after one has a fit, brain haemorrhage, stroke or simply die. My GP broke this news to me on 23rd December 2016. I spent Christmas day updating my will and waiting anxiously for the New Year to see a neurosurgeon to give me more detailed information about my condition.

The result of various consultations in early part of 2017 led to me having radio surgery on my brain in July 2017 to remove the malformation. The decision to go for surgery was made by a formula I was given to calculate the risk of having a brain haemorrhage versus the risk of doing nothing. The fact that I had an aneurysm attached to my AVM increased my risk to around 60% of my AVM bleeding as opposed to a 7-9% risk of something going wrong with the operation.

As a song writer / musician I decided it was time for me to get my act together and produce an album I have always dreamed of doing. Hence the album title Formula for Life and the title track.

Formula for Life track is about devising your own formula for life, listening to your intuition even when professionals are telling you otherwise. It’s about having your own core beliefs and conviction and doing what’s right for you.

I questioned god, the universe – “why me?”. Everything happens for a reason – for me this pushed me into action on several really positive fronts including setting up a couple of my own businesses.

This song inspired by my love of John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis whose music will never cease to be an inspiration for me.

Thanks for the amazing vocals from Will Gang, sax from Slick Sax and awesome production by Maestro Iguana.

Formula for life is a reality
Love yourself and your friends and your family
Speak up and get your voices heard
Don’t let people drag you down

Formula for life is a reality
Love yourself and your friends and your family
Speak up and get your voices heard
Don’t let people drag you down

Formula for life
Written on grains of sand
Sometimes the plans are washed from your hands
So what are you gonna do?
Gun against your head
Shoot it or not you lose anyway

Formula for life is a reality
Love yourself and your friends and your family
Speak up and get your voices heard
Don’t let people drag you down

Formula for life is a reality
Love yourself and your friends and your family
Speak up and get your voices heard
Don’t let people drag you down

Believing in God?
Why is there so much pain?
Is this a test that our faith is real?
It is how

How you choose to respond
Cast away any doubts
You will be shown the road for your life (fate)

Having fears, doubts and insecurities
about your faith, how you feel about your deity?
Do need something some more tangibility?
Something you can see, touch….. you feel me?
What is the use believing in a God
When you cannot ask him any questions?
I’m around can I ask why he allows the suffering?
Why are people born with disabilities?
Why does God let bad things happen in the world?
Not a question, it’s absurd!
Some say it’s theology,
But theology…… don’t answer me!
I’m happy with this gift called
I don’t need no fuss no strife
I don’t need speculations
Speculations only mess your life
But you’ve got the power in your formula to change your life
And make a better life
Until it’s your last day of life
In life that chooses you exactly
But instead of going through emotions
Define your priorities

Formula for life is a reality
Love yourself and your friends

Formula for life is a reality
Love yourself and your friends
